I grew up in a Europe that revered Americans for
having liberated it from the clutches of Nazi evil.

I grew up in a Europe where people named their
children and their streets after U.S. Presidents.

I grew up in a Europe where everything American
was what everyone always dreamt about.

Then I came here, and America gave me her priceless freedom, her endless
highways, her wide-open spaces, her dignity, her pride, her power, her protection,
and the amazing opportunity to succeed in
everything I had always wanted to become.

What a kind and generous nation.
I thank you for your many gifts!

It's difficult for anyone to know with certainty, what we should have done after those
planes crashed into the World Trade Center and into the Pentagon........and all of
us watched the countless videos of Bin Laden and his fellow-terrorist-goons
sitting on the floor of their medieval caves, dressed in their medieval robes,
as they enthusiastically and with great big evil smiles on their murderous faces,
exchanged stories about the horrific terrorist attack by wich they slaughtered
more than 4000 innocent men, women, and children, in one single hour.

I tend to believe that we were all in a state of profound shock, and that no
one, including everybody in Washington, was fully aware of what had actually
occurred. The most appropriate reaction would probably have been for us to
focus our entire military response on nothing else but to find Bin Laden, bring
him back to the USA, and then convict him in a public tribunal filmed for all the
world to see, of having orchestrated the most nefarious, peacetime act of terrorist
violence ever perpetrated against any population on earth.

Bin Laden should then have been shot to death by a U.S. Military firing squad.
And that too, ought to have have been filmed for all the world to see.

Then we should have bombed Mecca into oblivion, so that no goverment
anywhere on earth, would ever again decide to support and encourage
its criminal entities into attacking the United States of America.

It took a real-life attack, for our Defense Department to finally begin to do
something about the disgusting truth that it accomplished nothing at all for
decades, thereby creating the horrific reality that it was now sending our
military personnel into harm's way with inferior weapons, outdated
equipment, life-threatening vehicles, antiquated planes,
and a total absence of personal body-armor.

So now.......slowly.......that 911 massacre is achieving the unintended
result of strengthening our military capabilities and thereby
saving countless American lives today, as well as in the future.

STAGE ONE

When in England at a fairly large conference, the U.S. Secretary of State
was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury, if our plans for Iraq were just
one more example of American "empire building"?

"Throughout the years," the U.S. Secretary of State answered, "America
has sent many of its finest young military men into great peril to fight
for the freedom of those who live outside of its borders. The only
amount of land we have ever asked for in return, was enough to bury
those members of our armed forces, who never came back home again."

It suddenly became very quiet in that conference hall.

STAGE TWO

During a conference in France, attended by a number of international
engineers -- including American ones -- one of the French engineers asked
with a grin of sarcasm, "Remember that gigantic aircraft-carrier
America sent to Indonesia to help out some tsunami victims?
What did they intend to do.......bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly, "That aircraft-carrier
has 3 hospitals on board, which can treat several
hundred people.......it's nuclear-powered, and can supply
emergency electricity to most shore facilities.......it
has 3 cafetarias capable of providing 3 meals per day for 3,000
individuals.......it can purify several thousand gallons of seawater
per day.......it carries half a dozen helicopters that can airlift injured victims
to its flight deck medical center, or to the nearest hospital.......America
has 11 ships like that: how many does France have?"

Once again, deadly silence followed.

STAGE THREE

A United States Admiral was attending a conference of Admirals from
the U.S., British, Canadian, Australian, and French Navies.
At a cocktail reception, the U.S. Admiral found himself standing with a large
group of officers that included personnel from all of these countries.
Everyone was merrily chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks,
when a French Admiral suddenly complained that while Europeans knew
many languages, Americans seemed to speak only English.
He then continued, "Why must we always speak English, during these
conferences? Why can't we speak French?"

Without hesitation, the U.S. Admiral replied, "Perhaps that's because
the Brits, the Canadians, the Aussies and the Americans, made sure
that you would never have to speak German?"

You could have heard a pin drop!

PETER ROBINSON: Henry Luce famously called
the twentiest century "The American Century".
Will the twenty-first century represent a second
American century?

TOM WOLFE: I believe we're on the edge of
about 800 more years of American centuries.
The biggest problem is all the people who see
a problem. It's very fashionable, to think that
the end is near.

Did you ever wonder why Americans
are the most peaceful people on earth?

I attended a fairly small kind of street-event in my town, last week. Artists,
crafts people, New Age crystal merchants, and T-shirt printers, had arranged
their display tables between individual musicians, rockers, and alternative
bands. Some people danced. Most of the crowd just wandered about,
bought stuff, talked to friends, laughed softly at clever jokes, and generally
exuded a wonderful, internal kind of peace. I stood still among them, and
watched America for about an hour........I saw:

Toddlers, teenagers, grandparents. Long-haired guys, bald guys, moustached
guys, men in jeans, men in cowboy gear and Western hats, guys in army
uniforms, and leather-clad Harley types.

I saw beautiful women and sloppy jeans-type chicks. I saw women in skirts, in
shorts, and in long flowing dresses. Women wearing sandals, boots, or heels.
Long-haired girls and short-haired old ladies.

I saw faces that were slavic, baltic, mediteranian, native american, asian,
african, and scandinavian. I saw people arriving on motorcycles, in tiny
cars, large sedans, worn-out vans, small trucks and gigantic RV's.
Some of them, came on skateboards and bicycles.

Mostly, what I saw, was that nobody looked like anybody else, that every
person passing me, had a uniquely individual kind of style, and that they
revealed an amazing amount of interpersonal respect, gentle tolerance,
and just plain human kindness.

I stood there, and felt a warm affection for the people of my town and of
my country. I've been all around the world, and know with certainty, that
there exists no other place like this.

America is the most fascinating
and most creative nation on earth.
It supports concepts that are new,
and invites its people to achieve.

It tolerates just about every
religion known to humanity.

It protects and encourages
all of its many voices of dissent.

Which is why Americans can
afford to be peaceful and content.
